Hurricane Hits Mexico

Dozens of people are missing after a mudslide that buried homes as Manuel pounded the country's Pacific Coast, Mexico's president said Wednesday.
At least 58 people are unaccounted for in the municipality of Atoyac de Alvarez, Mexican Pesident Enrique Peña Nieto told reporters Wednesday, describing damage there as "catastrophic."
The mayor of Atoyac, which is about 50 miles west of Acapulco, told CNNMexico that 15 bodies had been recovered and at least 70 people remained trapped under mud that buried 20 homes.
Peña Nieto said hundreds of people have been rescued from La Pintada, the community in Atoyac hit by the mudslide. It's unclear how many people remain buried, he said.
Manuel, which strengthened into a hurricane Wednesday evening, was one of three storms bringing devastating deluges and flooding to Mexico. At least 80 people were killed in the storms, Mexico's interior ministry said.

Ibori Gave Me $15 Million Bribe In Bag- Ribadu

Desperate to halt a probe into his finances, former Delta State Governor James Ibori tried to bribe anti-corruption boss Nuhu Ribadu in 2007 with $15m in cash in a bag so heavy one man alone could not lift it, Ribadu told a London court on Thursday.
Reuters quoted Ribadu as telling the court that he pretended to take the bribe because he wanted the cash as evidence to use against Ibori in a prosecution, but rather than keep the money for himself he had it taken straight to the Central Bank of Nigeria to be kept safe in a vault.
Ibori was governor of oil-producing Delta State in southern Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. In 2012, he pleaded guilty at London’s Southwark Crown Court to 10 counts of fraud and money-laundering and was jailed for 13 years.      – The Punch

Nigerians Protest The New Police Registration Exercise

Nigerians are voicing out their displeasure over the new police vehicle registration. Many say they were being forced to bear an unnecessary burden - even after the Police declared on their Facebook page that the registration fee of N3, 500 for vehicles and N1, 500 for tricycles and motorcycles will be paid only once.
They say that it made no sense to bear the burden of a fresh vehicle registration exercise, whereas the data required from them had been captured in the Federal Road Safety Corps ongoing renewal of driving licences and vehicle number plates.
They described it as a misplacement of priority, being unable to figure out why the police wanted another exercise.
Tony Umaru, who visited the Facebook page of the exercise, warned that failure on the part of the Federal Government and the National Assembly to restrain the body from continuing with the exercise, other agencies connected with security and safety would adopt same and commence extortion of the populace.
As the primary agency responsible for internal security, the police should have conducted the registration exercise free of charge,  he noted.
He said, “This is absolute nonsense. Very soon the Fire Brigade will launch digital fire extinguishers that will come with a bio-metric chip to capture our data. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps may also decide to create its own data base. The same thing may apply to the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
“Assuming all the processes are free of charge, is the time free? Why can’t all of them go to a central data base and retrieve whatever information they want? If it is not N30,000 for number plate, it will be N3,500  for police bio-metric registration. There is another N2,000 for VIO e-coding. Whereas we still have water, waste and electricity bills to foot. How much do I collect as salary? If I am paying government all this money, what is the government giving me in return?”

Cult Attack: YABATECH Campus Shut Down By Students

There was commotion on Thursday morning at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, as academic programmes were grounded, while movements were restricted.
The development was as a  result of a protest by the students of the institution, who were expressing their displeasure at an attack on a student by suspected cult members on Wednesday night.
Some policemen, who attempted entering the campus to quell the unrest, were turned back at the gate by the students, who held everyone within the campus hostage for hours.
When our correspondent visited the campus, he observed that two fully loaded staff buses were prevented from entering the institution.
It was learnt that a clash between the cultist and some students the previous night had kept everybody awake.
A source in the Department of Mass Communication explained that the clash started after an unnamed student was attacked by some cult members  with machetes and was wounded.
Our correspondent learnt that the student had a misunderstanding with a suspected cult member.
Another source who pleaded anonymity said, “The student had ignored the cult member when that one told him to do something for him. He was later beaten, clubbed and cut with matchetes.
“Somebody alerted the victim’s friends and they also came out and faced the cult members.”
It was said that in the Wednesday rampage, security men on the campus were assaulted, while some school facilities were damaged.
On Thursday, the students took over the gates of the school and chased away security men to protest the Wednesday night attack.
One of the students at the gate told PUNCH Metro that the security men guarding the campus had failed in their duties.
He said,”Two weeks ago, they (the cultists) stormed the Art Block and wreaked havoc while our security men were merely watching. So the students decided to take over the security of the school.”
It was observed that a few of the security men had changed into mufti, while some of the students who tried to record the riot with their camera phones were assaulted.
The school’s major road was also barricaded. The students said they were awaiting the Rector to give an address on the way forward.
Later, the Dean of Students Affairs, Mr. Omobayo Raheem, addressed the warring youths, urging them to calm down.
He said, “Like many of you, I have not been able to sleep as a result of this development. I apologise to every one of us as a result of the injury one of us sustained. There is no doubt that injury to one is injury to all.
“I can assure you that the management has set up a high-powered panel to look into this and none of the culprits will go unpunished be they students or lecturers.”
He said the wounded student was being treated  at the school’s medical centre.
The Rector, Dr. Kudirat Ladipo, later came to address the protesters. She capped her address with a prayer for peace on the campus.

SHOCKING: Men Who Tried To Kidnap Yar'Adua's Daughter

On Thursday, it was reported that the State Security Service (SSS) paraded two suspects alleged to have plotted the abduction of one of the daughters of late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
The suspects, Hamza Abubakar (27) and Dennis Okoro (43) on August 21 allegedly attempted to abduct the unnamed daughter of the late president at a construction site at Kado, Abuja, said to be owned by the lady.
It was revealed that one of the suspect, Abubakar, cultivated the friendship of a security guard at the construction site and ask Okoro and the other accomplices to carry out the abduction but their attempt was foiled by members of the SSS.

Kelvin The Militant's Photo: How I See it.

Kelvin: 3rd From Right
There was something different about the way I felt when I saw this picture for the first time today. Something that suggested its uniqueness, in relation to the others of these Niger Delta militants, kidnappers or whatever other name we choose to call them depending on the issue at hand.

I will start my synopsis from the obvious models in the foreground of the picture. The aura around these militants depicts a kind of confidence one who is legally employed in the services of the nation's armed forces would have. Beyond those masks, I can't say there is no sense of uncertainty, but a kind of boldness fueled by the evil powers of chaos, neglect, misgovernance, anarchy and deliquency. These men have the stance of those who think they run the show, and have truly struck terror in the hearts of many. I don't blame them for that assumption.

The next on the list are the others in the background. I don't want to believe they were all kidnapped. They sure don't look kidnapped to me. I can even see admiration in most eyes, the type you see in someone suffering from the Stockholm Syndrome - a situation in which captors win admiration and support from those held captive by them. This picture is an analogy explaining the present situation in Nigeria, not only in the sense of the Niger Delta militant palaver but moreso, in the idea of having the suppressed citizenry sing praises and appear in photos with their suppressors. Kelvin and company have only helped in explaining the chaos which seems confusing to many.

P-Square's Paul Okoye Proposes To Anita Atokwu-Isama

When was it his twin brother Peter proposed to Lola Omotayo? Now Paul is about to do the same love thing. Apparently, he has decided to be more traditional about it. At least, it's not like I can see hot wheels coming alongside those diamond rings. Hey, didn't someone mention once that the diamond is a woman's best friend? Nice one Paul.

Bisi Ibidapo Obe Denies Reports of Visit From Dino Melaye

Contrary to reports given earlier, stating that Otunba Dino Melaye paid a reconciliatory visit, in company of some family and friends to the home of the popular actress in a bid to mend fences, Bisi Ibidapo Obe has once for all cleared doubts. She claims no such thing occured, as a matter of fact. She has also expressed displeasure towards the false rumors. Apparently, the reports given earlier are untrue. The two have been in the spot light for a while now, especially since Otunba Dino Melaye denied the actress' pregnancy once, way earlier.

Senior Anger: 71-Year-Old Pensioner Sues ASUU

There seems to be no end to the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) strike. Politicians, students and lecturers all seek for a reasonable solution to this difficult situation, but to no avail. Some young people who are affected by the strike support it, some have expressed their disapproval. Nigeria’s leader Goodluck Jonathan has personally ordered to find a way out of this educational-political-economic drama. Looks like the time has come for the older generation to speak up on the matter.
His patience snapped, and he sued the ASUU, as well as eight others.
Mallam Dankano Garba Ahmed, a 71-year-old pensioner from Kano State, in a suit submitted to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria laments that the ongoing strike is negatively affecting his daughter’s education.
The elderly man accuses the union of frustrating his efforts to get his daughter, Zainab Garba Ahmed, a 400 level Civil Engineering student at the Bayero University Kano, out of school within the determined time.
He says that the strike irritates him, as he earns “less than N30,000 as pension,” and, furthermore, has other children he would wish to support financially; this, he states, depends on whether his daughter graduates successfully.
He adds that the strike is making his daughter, who is the second plaintiff, idle, disorganised and psychologically disturbed.
“Her future and that of thousand others across the country are being stagnated strategically by the ongoing strike,” he decries.
The court is asked to determine if the 21 October 2009 agreement, concluded between ASUU and the Federal Government, is valid, binding, and not illegal.
If found otherwise, the pensioner asks the court to define whether ASUU has a right to commence strike for failure or refusal of the Federal Government to implement the said agreement.
He seeks perpetual injunction restraining ASUU from continuing with the strike or taking any action whatsoever and by whatever means to enforce the said agreement or compel the Federal Government to implement it.
The case comes up today, September 18, 2013, at the Kano division of National Industrial Court.

ABOMINATION: Wife Claims Husband Uses Her Menstrual Pads For Ritual

A housewife, Mrs Iyabo Odewunmi, has told an Osogbo Customary Court in Osun State to dissolve her 10-year-old marriage to her husband, Ojo, over his habit of using her menstrual pads for ritual purposes.
Iyabo, while complaining that her husband was a threat to her life and that of her children, said “I noticed that my menstrual pads had been missing as well as my bras and pants.
When I complained to my husband, he said nothing. He later promised to buy me new pants and bras.”
She accused her husband of being diabolical, adding, “my husband has been behaving in a mysterious way in the last few months and I see this as a threat to my life and that of my children.”
In his response, Ojo informed the court that his wife lied against him because she was looking for flimsy excuses to abandon the marriage.
However, President of the court, Mrs Temilade Agboola, advised the couple to find means of resolving their dispute rather than dissolve the marriage and adjourned the case to November 5, 2013 for judgment.

Do You Agree?: Poor People Not Wanted In Lagos Megacity

I came across this write-up. Do you agree with the opinion? Drop comments and let's rub minds.

Lagos is now going to be a megacity. Under the able leadership of Governor Babatunde Fashola, the apostle of good governance, Lagos is undergoing a major makeover.
The Atlantic Ocean will be banished, to be replaced by Eko Atlantic; a shimmering new 3.5- mile island built literally on the water behind a “great wall of Lagos.” Greenery has suddenly appeared in Lagos, displacing the concrete jungle. There are now parks with manicured lawns. There are now tree-lined roads. Pot-holes are now being tarred. Sidewalks are now provided for pedestrians.
*Eko o ni baje
In the middle of this transformation, a new immigration department has been opened in Lagos. “Illegal aliens” are being expelled and are shipped back to their homelands in the dead of night. New visitors may have to obtain visas to come here.
All this makes it imperative to determine who exactly is the Lagosian? Who is entitled to enjoy the new amenities that Governor Fashola and his team of dedicated public-servants are bringing to Lagos? Accordingly, a battle royal has emerged for the rightful ownership of Lagos. Some are insisting Lagos is no man’s land.
Others are discovering Lagos as their fatherland. But there is no question that the government has already determined the precise identity of the true Lagosian.
As far as the Lagos State Government is concerned, the true Lagosian is not the Yoruba man or the Igbo man. Neither is he the Hausa man or the Fulani man. The true Lagosian is the rich man. The poor have been served quit notice. They are no longer wanted in Lagos. Fashola’s resounding slogan is “Eko o ni baje,” which means Lagos will not go to the dogs. The poor are considered the dogs of Lagos. In that troublesome capacity, they can have no place in Lagos, if Lagos is to become the megacity of Governor Fashola’s lofty dreams!
*Action Governor: For some strange reason, Lagos has tended to have better Governors than most states of the federation. But if you were to ask me who is the best among all the Governors of Lagos, I would answer you without hesitation. In my opinion, it is Governor Babatunde Fashola. Fashola is a man with a vision. He is a man with a purpose. He is a man clearly able to translate ideas into weapons. He has transformed and is transforming Lagos right before our very eyes.
But I have a nagging suspicion that the reason why I am so readily persuaded by Fashola’s virtues might not be unconnected with the fact that I am not a poor man. The poor themselves may have a very different point of view. They are probably likely to insist that the best governor in the history of Lagos is Lateef Kayode Jakande; alias “Baba Kekere.”
I am not a poor man by Nigerian standards. Therefore, I do not presume to speak for the poor. But then, increasingly, I am beginning to wonder who exactly speaks for them in Lagos. One thing is certain, Fashola speaks primarily for the rich; and this is not good enough. In the Lagos of today, the poor have no voice. Fashola’s laudable policies are too one-sided. They are tailor-made for the rich: and are grossly disadvantageous to the poor.
*Relocating the poor: I don’t have to be poor to know that the poor are increasingly unwelcome in Lagos. The genius of Fashola is to relocate them to the outskirts of the city. If they are non-indigenes, they are relocated back to their homesteads. The systematic ridding of Lagos of the poor is a longstanding process. The poor were shipped out of Maroko. It has been replaced by Oniru where apartments go for an average of 2.5 million naira a year.
Slums in Mushin, Oluwole and Makoko have been demolished. The residents were evicted from their homes, with no talk of rehabilitation. Markets in Tejuoso, Yaba and Oshodi have been demolished and rebuilt. The new stalls are beyond the pocket of the earlier poor occupants. Everywhere in Lagos, the poor are becoming persona non grata.
In places like Ojota, Makoko, and Ijora-Badia East, the poor residents have been evicted from their homes. In some cases, they were given only 72 hours notice to leave. In Makoko/Iwaya, the government’s quit notice described them “environmental nuisances” that “undermined the megacity status” of Lagos. It stated that their menial existence was detrimental to the government’s determination to beautify the Lagos waterfront.
*Eko Atlantic: As the poor are being squeezed out, so is more leg-room being created for the rich. The Eko Atlantic project is the epitome of this. It involves dredging 140 million tons of sand from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean to subdue the sea and create nine million square kilometers of prime real estate, protected by an eight metre-high wall, vaunted to last 1000 years. When completed, the project will boast residential areas, offices, shops, and leisure facilities for 250,000 people, with another 150,000 commuting to work. To have a foothold in this brave new world, you will need a cool 300,000 naira for just one square metre of land.
However, what Lagos desperately needs is not a “Manhattan island” that will cater primarily for the rich.
Massive low cost housing
What Lagos needs is massive low-cost housing to accommodate millions of slum-dwellers. The state government itself acknowledges that Lagos has a housing shortage in excess of five million. By its own estimates, it needs an annual growth of at least 200,000 houses to keep up with the population growth. In spite of this, it touts a six billion-dollar white-elephant project that ignores this urgent need of the poor masses in favour of one that caters to the rich few.
*Ban of Okadas: I hate okadas. They are a menace on the streets. Even the sidewalks are not safe from them. Okada riders are a law unto themselves. They obey no traffic rules. They imperil their clients by taking dangerous risks. The mortuaries and hospitals are filled with those who have lost life and limb because of their recklessness. But I will be the first to admit that one of the reasons I am able to hate okadas with so much passion is because I have a car. I don’t have to take okadas and have never ever taken them.
Governor Fashola also has a car. So it does not surprise me that, like me, he is also fed up with the menace of okadas in Lagos. Therefore, recently an edict was passed banning them in most areas of Lagos. The government refused to provide alternative means of transportation for those who don’t have cars before banning the okadas. This oversight translates into contempt for the poor. I don’t have to be poor to recognise that it has been disastrous.
Since the banning of the okadas, I have repented of my earlier hatred of okadas. No matter that I wind up my tinted windows; the better to enjoy the air-conditioning in my car, I cannot remain oblivious to the mass of humanity in Lagos now constrained to walk for miles or stand for hours at bus-stops, waiting in readiness for the battle ahead when it will become necessary to fight for the few spaces available in the few buses when they finally, finally, arrive.
Let’s face it; with the okadas gone, the poor in Lagos don’t get home until midnight and then they have to set out for work by 5 a.m.; and that is if they have a job. I asked a lady in my neighbourhood supermarket how much she makes as a cashier. She told me N20,000 a month. I don’t know how anybody can survive in Fashola’s Lagos with such a salary, especially since over 50 per cent of that goes for transportation alone.
*Paying tolls: The new departure in Fashola’s Lagos is that people now have to pay for driving on tarred roads. If you are one of the poor residents of Ajah, Badore, Elegushi, Ajiran, Sangotedo, Abijo, Ibeju, and other communities in Eti-osa, Epe and Ibeju-Lekki local government areas, you will now have to pay tolls for leaving your house to head for the Lagos mainland and pay again for going back home. On the Lekki expressway, no less than three tolls are envisaged for just a 50- kilometre stretch of road.
The Lagos State Government is only interested in exploiting the poor in this area, and there are literally millions living there. There is little or no government infrastructure there. There is no general hospital, and no low-income housing scheme. No sporting or recreational facility. No public transportation system. No public water works: just the payment of tolls. The original idea was to develop a coastal road as an alternative route to the tolled road, but this has not been done.
*No petty-trading: So how can the poor make ends meet in Lagos? With okada gone, and excluding outright crime, one option is petty-trading Lagos-style.
Street trading
This entails turning the streets into one big supermarket, and training for the 2016 Olympics by running after cars in order to sell something as menial as groundnuts. But even here, you are likely to be confronted by the long arm of the law. Street-trading is frowned at in Lagos. The “Kick Against Indiscipline” brigade will seize your goods if they get hold of you.
The Arab Spring outburst in Tunisia started because the goods of a poor street-trader, Mohamed Bouaziz, were confiscated by the police. That act brought the man to the end of his rope. He bought a jerry-can of petrol and set himself on fire. Those sympathetic to his plight took to the streets, and the upshot of this was the overthrow of the government.
Lagos, Nigeria may not be Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia. Nevertheless, Governor Fashola has a legacy to protect. Rather than this new policy of banishing the poor to Siberia, Fashola should sit down and fashion comprehensive policies that take into consideration their acute suffering in Lagos. If he does not, his disregard of the poor will soon overshadow his remarkable achievements in Lagos State.

Couple Killed In Kaduna By Unknown Gunmen

The brutal murder of a middle aged man, identified as Asa Ibrahim by unknown gunmen in Kafanchan, headquarters of Jemaa Local Government Area of Kaduna state almost resulted into a major crisis on Monday but for the timely intervention of the Police and Soldiers drafted to the area.
While the natives maintained that  the couple were killed by the yet to be identified assailants,  the state Police commissioner, Mr Olufemi Adenaike told Channels Television that only one person was killed on his way to the farm, an incident which he said prompted the  villagers  to go on rampage to protest his death.
He said the protesters comprising mostly women and youth destroyed some places of worship and the Kafachan campus of the State University, adding that more Policemen and Soldiers have been drafted to the community to maintain law and order.
Banks and other commercial activities were closed today in Kafanchan because of the tension.
However, the state Governor, Muktar Yero  Yero called on residents of Kafanchan  and indeed the entire state to remain calm and law abiding over the security breach that occurred in the area on Monday.
In a statement signed by his spokesman,  Ahmed Maiyaki,  Governor  Yero urged people in the area to shun rumours and any act capable of disrupting peace and order as security agencies have already commenced investigation into the matter and will soon apprehend those found culpable.
The governor while asking security agencies to provide maximum surveillance in Kafanchan and environs towards ensuring the maintenance of law and order, also directed the state bureaus of both Islamic and Christian affairs to commence the process of sensitizing followers of the two faiths in the area and engage religious leaders on the need to continue to peacefully co-exist as one people.

Boko Haram Ambush and Kill 40 Soldiers, As 65 Remain Missing In Borno

Unconfirmed report says at least 40 Nigerian soldiers were killed and 65 others are missing in an attack carried out by suspected members of the extremist group, Boko Haram in Borno state.
The casualty figure can be said to be one of the heaviest on a single attack since the declaration of the state of emergency by the president five months ago in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.
The incident occurred along the Baga, Maiduguri road on Friday, September 13, in what can be described as a classic case of operational and communication failure.
A detachment of soldiers under the 134 Battalion of the 12 Brigade under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) stationed in Kangarwa village in Kukawa local government, had conducted a reconnaissance to gather intelligence around the area, during which they established the presence of previously unnoticed Boko Haram camps.
Due to lack of communication, the troop ran into the terrorists without knowing that the aerial bombardment had been cancelled and they were caught unawares.
The soldiers were trapped in the ambush under heavy fire from the militants who had surrounded the area, leaving at least 40 soldiers dead and 65 others have remained missing.
The insurgents confiscated a huge cache of weapons from the soldiers after the attack.

Mother of Two Drags Husband to Court to Ascertain Marital Status

Ramatu Yunus, a mother of two children on Tuesday dragged her husband to the Magajin Gari Sharia Court, asking the court to determine her marital status.

Yunus who currently resides in Rigasa, Kaduna State claims that since she returned to Kaduna after the demolition of their house in Abuja, her husband, Nuraddeen Shehu, had abandoned her and the children.

Shehu had allegedly asked her to return to her parents house.

"I went to his parent's house, I told them that since we came back to Kaduna nobody is taking care of us", she said.

"Please they should talk to him. I told them even in Abuja he does not take care of us, he does no pay his children school fees and did not feed us",Yumus added.

Her Husband, Shehu did not appear in court, however his younger brother, Abdulrahman Shehu, who was present, told the court that the summon was served on their father.

"We have not seen my elder brother for over two years, that is why my father asked me to come to court because he is too old", Shehu said.

Shehu further told the court his father had resolved a similar issue between the accused and complainant a few years back and since then the family had not set eyes on him.

Khadi Ibrahim Muhammad, presiding judge adjourned the case till 30 September and threatened to arrest the accused if he failed to appear in court.
